Like us humans, our house cats need fluids to keep their bodies functioning properly. By nature, however, cats are not big drinkers.
As a prospective cat owner, you face a tricky but fun task: coming up with a name for your new furry housemate. After all, you want to pick a name that really suits him or her! Last year, Japanese researchers showed that cats do listen to their names. And your cat should last a while, too, because on average, house cats live to be 14 years old. The oldest cat in the world according to the Guinness Book of Records even lived to be 38 years old and listened to the unusual name 'Creme Puff'. Reason enough to think carefully about a suitable name for your new cat or kitten!
Some names return to the list of popular cat names every year, but others are clearly influenced by films or series that came out in that year. In 2019, for example, a suspicious number of males were named Simba, and for females, owners often chose Nala. But this is not surprising when you consider that the remake of The Lion King came out in 2019!
These were the 10 most popular cat names in 2019 (in no particular order):
Choupette: the white Burmese who inherited much of the late fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld's fortune is called Choupette. To us, it sounds like a rather exotic name, but not to French people. For it is a pet name meaning something like sweetheart.
Grumpy Cat: the cat that always seemed to be grumpy, that was Grumpy Cat. But Grumpy Cat was only her nickname. Her real name, however, was no less special: Tardar Sauce.
Princess Monster Truck: This Persian cat with a large underbite may not be mother's most beautiful, but her distinctive appearance and unusual name have gained her a lot of followers on social media.
We cat owners knew it all along, of course, but it took a bunch of Japanese researchers to prove that cats really do listen to their names, and not just react to their owner's voice or certain sounds. If you want a cat to start listening to its name, you need to make sure it associates it with positive things like eating, playing and cuddling. So try not to use his name when he has done mischief and you are actually a bit angry with him.
When you are playing together with a ball, it is the right time to use his name to encourage him to bring the ball back to you. And also if you call him for a tasty snack you use his name, of course.
You really don't necessarily have to be original in your choice of cat name. Sometimes your tough guy is just a real Max or your long-haired cat is a real Fluff. The important thing is that you think the name suits the cat or kitten. So take some time to come up with a nice name, because it is better to choose after a few days, than to give your pet four different names within a week. Short names do often 'mouth' best, but you can of course always shorten a longer name when you call your cat.

How do you make a cat or kitten less shy? Because, of course, humans are very big creatures! Can you even trust them?
Exercise is healthy, so is your cat. It uses up its energy, puts its muscles to work and is also good for its brain.
